Voice Assistants vs Voicebots - Are Voice Assistants Truly Superior?

Do Voice Assistants truly offer benefits that make it worth integrating over a Voicebot? Well, read this blog post and find out for yourselves!

If you’ve read our previous blog then you know now that Voice Assistants and Voicebots are not really one and the same, in fact we seemed to proclaim that Voice Assistants are the superior Voice Technology. However, are Voice Assistants really all that they claim to be? Are they really better than Chatbots?

Let’s break both offerings down so that we can create a clearer picture -

The Breakdown

1) The Technology involved

Gears
What's working behind the scenes?

In the case of most Voicebots, simple Automatic Speech Recognition is employed to convert speech captured via the microphone on the device to text in the language spoken by the user. Nothing more, nothing less. This is the extent to which they are Voice-enabled, although a few smarter Voicebots also employ Natural Language Processing or NLU to some extent to understand contexts.

Whereas in the case of Voice Assistants there are several pieces working in tandem with one another to provide a truly comprehensive Voice experience.

In the case of Voice Assistants there are four main components that exist:

  1. Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)
  2. Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  3. Translation
  4. Text To Speech (TTS)

These components work in tandem with one another to create a truly immersive Voice experience for users.

2) Functions

Functions the end user can expect to perform

Due to the differences in technology, the amount of functions that a Voicebot is able to perform is very limited in comparison to a Voice Assistant. In the case of a Voicebot, functionality is mostly limited to making inputs after which the interaction is restricted due to the rule-based nature of such bots.

With smart Voice Assistants, consumers can engage in more open-ended interactions such as making voice searches, asking questions, and even navigating apps or the internet using Voice.

The functions a Voice Assistant can perform are much more complex when compared to a Voicebot.

3) Business Use

In terms of business use, the difference is night and day

The main use of a Voicebot in various businesses is for customer support. Voicebots are generally used as a customer support tool and something that customers have the option to use to solve queries and problems before being given the opportunity to be transferred to a real human being.

In the case of a Voice Assistant, the main business use is to increase revenue generation, improve customer experience, and acquire new customers through leveraging Voice technology.

4) Conversational Capabilities

Voice as Input vs Conversational Capabilities

While a Voicebot is capable of just accepting Voice Inputs and serving relevant results a Voice Assistant is capable of complex two-way interactions.

For example, if you are ordering ice cream through a Voice Assistant on a grocery app, the Voice Assistant can ask you further questions enquiring about the flavor you want, the quantity required, if there are any offers available, and more.

5) User Experience

The missing piece

While a Voicebot is bound to be able to assist users in a very limited way, Voice Assistants seamlessly merge with the web or mobile application UI of which they are a part of to completely augment user experiences. These Voice Assistants completely change the way in which an application can be used and feel native to the app.

Although Voicebots too, offer another mode of input to customers, it feels more like a novelty than a feature that is indeed functional. Voicebots also feel like a third party service that do not truly belong in the application being used.
