Alexa Skill is like an application but built on Alexa that can perform a set of functions based on the user utterances. Businesses can add skills to Alexa to allow their consumers to perform a set of tasks directly from Alexa.

Alexa skills are being added to enable users to interact with businesses directly through their smart devices and increase their discoverability. For eg: "Alexa, Play Music by [Artist Name]" would play a song created by that particular artist. Amazon boasts to have over 100,000 alexa skills but most of them are rarely used.
